Introduction
The temple at the top of the steps rising upward from Kusatsu’s famous Yubatake is Kosen-ji Temple.
The principal deity, or honzon, enshrined in the temple’s main hall is Yakushi Nyorai, or the Medicine Buddha, one of the three great Yakushi enshrined at Japanese hot springs.
Today, in addition to the Yakushi Nyorai honzon, the grounds of Kosen-ji Temple hold numerous halls such as the Shaka-do and Fudo-do, as well as the Yuzen-do, where the onsen itself is enshrined.
There are also many noteworthy spots featuring statues such as monuments to Kobayashi Issa and Matsuo Basho.
